As if you didn't know ! Most doctors enjoy speaking a highly technical language, using scary
medical jargon to explain things to anxious and worried parents. It adds to their aura of mystery
and magic.
But not Dr.Mani ! He believes that explanations must EXPLAIN, writings must BE READ,
teaching must EDUCATE. Dr.Mani makes things EASY TO UNDERSTAND.
But why is he doing this ? Well, frankly, it's because he, like you, believes that we are not getting
our due, not being involved enough in the treatment planning and decision making about a person
very very important to us - our child.
We spend a ridiculous amount of time hunting for information, researching medical journals, visiting
libraries, surfing the Net, trying to take a crash course in medicine in order to make some sense out
of medical literature.
Does the following passage make sense to you ...........?
"The cumulative risk for the development of protein-losing enteropathy was 13.4% (with
confidence limits of 30% to 70%) among 30-day survivors, and 5-year survival decreased from
81% to 73% (p = 0.006). Hemodynamic studies done coincident with the diagnosis have
shown increased systemic venous pressure, decreased cardiac index, increased pulmonary
vascular resistance, and increased ventricular end-diastolic pressure."
Or does Dr.Mani's interpretation of the same ?
"One in ten early survivors of the operation run a risk of losing protein in their
stools. This problem causes fewer patients to live beyond five years after surgery.
These patients have raised pressure in their veins; their hearts pump weakly; their
lung blood vessels resist flow of blood through them; and even when relaxed, their
ventricles have a higher pressure - all these indicate poor heart activity."
Here's what Dr.Mani himself has to say about his Fontanreport:

Dear Friend:
If your child, or someone you know and love, has had the Fontan operation or one of its
modifications, you need more information. The report titled "After the Fontan" covers all three
categories of the Fontan operation - early and late survival after the Fontan, quality of life issues
and complications of a Fontan procedure.
It applies to all conditions for which a Fontan operation is done - tricuspid atresia, pulmonary
atresia, HLHS, single ventricle and others. It doesn't matter why your child had a Fontan, the
results explained in the report are relevant to all - and throw up many pleasant surprises !

My wife and I found the report very useful. Our son will have the
Fontan surgery shortly. As parents, we are particularly concerned
over his future limitations, quality of life, etc. Your report
helped address some of those fears........You presented the data
in an easy to understand manner that allowed my wife too to read
the report on her own. Thank you, Dr. Mani.
